Our staff expertise is integral to delivering a high-quality educational experience for our students. Education should inspire students to value learning for its own sake; Townley students learn in a stimulating environment where teachers understand how to challenge and where the range of cocurricular opportunities is vast and varied, Townley provides a purposeful work environment, and we seek to recruit and retain dynamic and inspirational staff that share in our vision and commitment.
All students are given a taste of Latin and the ancient world in Year 7 before they choose whether to continue studying the subject throughout Years 8-9. At GCSE, students can opt for Latin or Classical Civilisation. The latter has been especially popular at the school as students enjoy learning about Women in the Ancient World or War and Warfare, typically generating three Classical Civilisation GCSE sets. We believe in a holistic approach to the study of Classics so as well as mastering the language, learning about Roman life, beliefs and ideas is also a core part of Latin in KS3 and KS4. We are planning on offering Latin as an A Level option for the first time next year. Classical Civilisation remains a popular choice at A Level, covering topics such as the World of the Hero, Imperial Image and Love and Relationships in the Ancient World.
As well as developing good subject knowledge, we encourage students to make judgements based on a critical engagement with evidence of all kinds – from archaeological finds such as votive offerings and ruined buildings, to epic literature and artworks. We also encourage students to develop empathy skills, focusing a large amount of our time on the experiences of diverse audiences (both ancient and modern) and considering how their value systems might impact their understanding of a particular ancient source.
Our lessons are varied and engaging, incorporating discussion, roleplay, group presentations and a wide variety of uses of technology. We also offer trips to Bath and Oxford in the lower school and to Rome in 6th form to bring the subject to life.
