Reading at Townley
Reading is seen as incredibly important at Townley and we are fortunate that our students agree with us! All students in school have dedicated reading time built into their timetable for reading and year 7 and 8 are offered a further 50 minutes a week in the library. All students are expected to have a reading book on them at all times to allow them to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure so if possible, parents should ensure they have one at the start of term in September. If this is not possible, please do not worry as we can supply them with a book from school.
The Library
- The Library is located on the second floor of the main building and is open before school and after school Monday to Friday. Students may also use the library during break and lunch time.
- All students may borrow up to two items for two weeks, which can be renewed unless someone else has requested it. Any lost or damaged books will have to be replaced or paid for by the student.
- All years can request to be trained as Library Assistants to help in the Library which we welcome and is a brilliant part to their Leadership journey at Townley.
- As well as a physical Library, we also have an online Library Catalogue which is available to search for resources as well as reserving books and writing reviews.
Accelerated Reader Programme
We use the Accelerated Reader system in year 7 and year 8 to monitor reading ability and choices for all our students. Students are given opportunities to read silently during the school week and take specifically designed quizzes on each book they read. The data collected from these quizzes allows us to recommend future books to students and encourages them to be both challenged and stimulated in their reading.
