Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education plays a vital role in equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in and contribute to society. STEM subjects have permeated every aspect of our lives; providing both opportunities and challenges. For young people, STEM opens doors to a rich diversity of opportunities, which can improve the quality of people’s everyday lives and find solutions to global challenges, such as sustainable economic development.

Recent research highlights the shortfall in the number of people, especially girls, choosing to study STEM subjects, as well as the need to double the supply of skilled workers in STEM-related industries in the next seven to ten years. An important aspect is the issue of gender and ethnicity imbalance in the supply.

Hence at Townley, we have a diverse and dynamic STEM enrichment program which aims to both enthuse and excite students about the vital role STEM plays in our everyday lives; as well as provide clear insights into the possible career routes open for them.

Each Year group at Townley has their own STEM Day; designed and developed to include a variety of experiences from practical workshops to panel discussions with industry professionals.

British Science Week

From Monday 13th to Friday 17th March, we will be celebrating British Science Week 2023 here at Townley Grammar School. We will have lots of fun and exciting events planned for our students to take part in across the Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments. Find out more about last year's British Science Week  in our 2022 Newsletter and watch this video from 2017.

Townley ShakeUp STEM Magazine

Last year we were delighted to launch Issue 1 of the new Townley ShakeUpSTEM magazine written by 11 of our Year 12 STEM leaders and designed and created by Mr A Brown.  We hope you enjoy reading this wonderful array of articles and we look forward to future Issues and future contributions by students and staff, parents and carers alike.

One day during the year, each of these groups is off-timetable learning about STEM-related subjects.

  • Year 7 - The Magic of STEM
  • Year 8 - Mission to Mars
  • Year 9 - Careers
  • Year 10 - Enigma
  • Year 12 - Offsite exploration

Primary Outreach

To encourage a love of STEM in our local community, we offer bespoke STEM opportunities for the primary cohort in the borough, exploring the properties of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We offer both a science experience in our modern science laboratories as well as sessions delivered on location at the primary schools. These are very popular and get booked up very quickly.
